Use pressure to make a fountain with only a water bottle and a balloon!

You will need:

  • Balloon
  • Water bottle
  • Straw
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Paint or food colouring
  • Modelling clay or Blu tack

  • Grab the water bottle and poke a hole in the middle using the scissors
  • Use a pen to make the hole circular
  • Put the straw in the hole so it reaches the bottom of the bottle
  • Put the modelling clay or blu tack around the straw to cover any gaps in the bottle
  • Fill the bottle with water just under the hole you have made
  • Pour paint or food colouring into the bottle to give the water some colour
  • Blow up the balloon and twist the neck of it
  • Put the balloon around the bottle neck
  • Untwist the balloon and watch the water rise out of the straw

The Science Bit:

The balloon has a lot of pressure built up inside it, due to the large amount of air molecules in the small space. When the balloon is released, the air pressure on the top of the water increases. The increased pressure from the air molecules forces the water out of the straw. This then creates the balloon fountain.
