Covering Bath, Bristol and parts of Wiltshire

Fun Science has been offering alternative provision since 2020 and has seen many children thrive through our practical child-led sessions.

We work primarily with children in Years 1-8 who are struggling to access mainstream education. We are able to work outside this age range if the child is older but working at a younger level or if it is beneficial for a pupil we already work with to continue the provision into Year 9 and beyond. We are a mobile service and can come to the child’s home, school or a community setting.

Our sessions are often accessed by children who have anxiety surrounding school or learning. We aim to show them that learning can be lots of fun and to increase their confidence as a learner. We work with children with ASD, ADHD, learning disabilities and trauma backgrounds.

We often offer provision at home as part of a package for children who are awaiting a new school placement or are unable to access learning within a school setting. Our sessions have also been used within school, often at the beginning of a school day, to help children who are school-refusing and give them an exciting start to their education that day. We also work with children who are accessing education from home on a long-term basis (EOTAS).

Areas covered

We are able to travel to the pupil’s school or home and cover Bristol, Bath, Keynsham, South Gloucestershire, Trowbridge, Calne, Corsham, Chippenham, Warminster, Westbury, surrounding areas.

Our sessions

We run child-led science sessions for either one hour or two hours, once or twice a week. We work on either a 1:1 basis or with a small group of up to 5 pupils. We guide the child(ren) through a range of science experiments and help them to develop their working scientifically skills. As well as teaching science topics appropriate to the pupil’s school year (and often beyond) we also focus on their interests and passions.

We build the following skills into our sessions as needed:

-Listening to adult instructions

-Assessing and managing risk

-Fine motor skills

-Focusing for increasing amounts of time

-Reading, writing and related skills

-Being careful with equipment

-Maths skills including measuring, drawing graphs and tables, calculating means etc.

Support for learners with SEND

Everything we do is bespoke for each learner. We are able to adjust all topics to fit in with their interests but also we can adapt everything to the pupils needs – for example, avoiding items that smell for a pupil with sensitivity to these things, using lots of items that are interesting to touch for a sensoryseeking child, or ensuring there is no touching for a sensory avoiding child.

None of our sessions involve loud noises and children know exactly what is going to happen in all experiments before it happens.

Children do not have to write anything but are encouraged to do as much writing as they feel able to – they can dictate their answers, or type them, if that is more accessible for them. They may prefer to draw their answers rather than write and that is ok too, everything we do is adaptable.

All our sessions are geared around the goals identified for the child and a large part of this is the goals taken from their EHCP.

We record the goals that have been achieved as we go along and will work with commissioners to create new goals when appropriate.
